This year is the 11th year since the Amazing Power of Juggling was established by the Hong Kong Playground Association, with a mission to give young people in Kwai Chung district a unique kind of experience. Its members are aged between seven and over twenty. Some have joined the organisation for more than ten years. These post-90s and post-00s look no different from other young people of their age. It was a surprise to find that they all had some amazing skills!
During the interview, members briefed us on circus skills like diabolo, plate-spinning and juggling. They generally agreed that diabolo was the easiest for beginners to start with, although it would take time and efforts to hone the skills. In the process they have not only learnt different circus skills but also the importance of perseverance. Their skills were obtained after many trials and failures.
By practising circus skills, one can improve his/her physical fitness and develop tenacity. It will even help bring people closer. The organisation regularly holds voluntary performances and visits and those members who are passive by nature are given the opportunity to interact with others in the activities. Through taking part in performances and competitions they have built self-esteem, become more willing to communicate with others and improved their interpersonal skills.
Ms Lings Chan, the person-in-charge of the organisation considered the attitudes of schools and students were two extremes. While students can spend several hours a day to practise diabolo, most schools are not willing to put resources in promoting circus activities. As there are large-scale inter-school competitions in sports activities like basketball, soccer and swimming, schools tend to put their resources in these activities to train elites who may win medals for the schools. On the contrary, the number of open competitions in circus skills in Hong Kong is few and on a smaller scale. Naturally, most schools have reservations about promoting circus activities.
After a decade since its establishment, the organisation is still facing many challenges. At present, it relies on the funding from the association to meet its daily expenses. As circus activities are not considered as traditional sports or arts activities, it is difficult for the organisation to seek funding. To reduce the organisation’s financial burden, members will sometimes learn by themselves through the internet.
Nevertheless, members of the Amazing Power of Juggling face the difficulties with a positive attitude. They care about their every performance and training opportunity. Apart from getting applause from the audience, all of them hope that they can promote circus activities and spread the message of helping others and oneselves through giving performances and taking part in competitions.
